This New Zealand self-drive tour of the South Island includes 16 days' Toyota Corolla (CDMR) car rental with Budget, 15 nights' accommodation in Superior Bed and Breakfasts or Hotels, meals as indicated, daily driving notes and route map. 

We have used a combination of accommodation styles however, the length of stay and accommodation used can be tailored to suit the time you have available and your budget. Our staff will be happy to advise and give you a personal quotation for the arrangements that suit you.

Day 1: Arrive Christchurch (B)
After claiming your luggage at the airport, collect your rental car from the Budget office located in the terminal building. Drive to your accommodation.
2 nights: The George, Christchurch - Room only

Day 2: Christchurch (B)
A day at leisure in the Garden City. Enjoy a stroll through the Botanical Gardens, drive over the Port Hills for spectacular views of the city, mountains and sea or drive over to the French settlement of Akaroa on Banks Peninsula.

Day 3: Christchurch - Dunedin (363 kms/226 miles - 5 hours) (B)
Travel south across the Canterbury Plains to the farming district of Ashburton. Continue through the seaside town of Timaru to Dunedin, the Edinburgh of the South.
2 nights: Fletcher Lodge, Dunedin - Bed & Breakfast

Day 4: Dunedin (B)
A day at leisure to enjoy the Otago Peninsula and to view the Yellow Eyed Penguins, Albatross and wildlife.

Day 5: Dunedin - Invercargill (210 kms/130 miles - 3 hours) (B)
Travel through the lush southland farmland to Invercargill, New Zealand's southernmost city.
2 nights: Safari Lodge, Invercargill - Bed & Breakfast

Day 6: Invercargill (B)
A free day to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Catlins district, visit Riverton or take a day tour to Stewart Island.

Day 7: Invercargill - Queenstown (190 kms/118 miles - 2½ hours) (B)
Travel through Lumsden and Winton to Lake Wakatipu and then on to Queenstown.
3 nights: Evergreen Lodge, Queenstown - Bed & Breakfast

Days 8 & 9: Queenstown (B)
Two days to enjoy the many activities available in Queenstown. We would recommend that you take a day tour to Milford Sound, visit Arrowtown and experience jetboating.

Day 10: Queenstown - Franz Josef Glacier (332 kms/206 miles - 5 hours) (B)
Leave Queenstown and travel over the Crown Range to Lake Wanaka. Continue on past Lake Hawea and through the Haast Pass to the West Coast. Continue North to Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers.
Overnight: Te Waonui Forest Retreat Glacier - Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

Day 11: Franz Josef Glacier - Greymouth (203 kms/126 miles 3 hours) (B)
Continue on this spectacular journey up the West Coast through Hokitika and Greymouth to your accommodation which is located 14 kms north of Greymouth.
Overnight: The Breakers, near Greymouth - Bed & Breakfast

Day 12: Greymouth - Nelson (296 kms/184 miles 4 hours) (B)
Stop at Punakaiki to see the unusual limestone rock formations and blowholes before continuing through the Buller Gorge and Nelson Lakes National Park to Nelson.
2 nights: Bronte Country Estate, Nelson - Bed & Breakfast

Day 13: Nelson (B)
A day at leisure to enjoy this area known for its orchards, hop fields, potters, painters, weavers and wine makers. You may also like to take a day tour in to the Abel Tasman National Park.

Day 14: Nelson - Kaikoura (241 kms/150 miles - 3 ½ hours) (B)
Travel through the forest clad ranges to Blenheim, centre of the Marlborough wine growing district. Continue on down the east coast of the South Island to Kaikoura.
Overnight: Hapuka Lodge, Kaikoura. Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

Day 15: Kaikoura - Christchurch (NM)
We suggest that you take an early morning Whale Watch tour before departing for Christchurch. You may also like to visit the seal colony on the Kaikoura Peninsula.

Day 16: Depart Christchurch (NM)
Day at leisure before returning your car to the airport and departing Christchurch for your onward flight.
