4 Days Tongariro National Park & Tongariro Crossing.

Price from £861 per person

Tongariro National Park is centred on the 3 active volcanoes of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. Each night of the trek you will return to the comfort and elegance of the Chateau Tongariro on Mt Ruapehu.

Tongariro National Park offers New Zealand's spectacular volcanic scenery.Experience the majestic beauty of one of the world's most dramatic parks and the Tongariro Crossing. You'll enjoy walks through low-lying forests as well as the unusual rock, tussock and alpine herb fields, usually buried by snow on the upper reaches. And after each day's walk, you'll return to the comfort of New Zealand's most luxuriously elegant hotel - the Bayview Chateau Tongariro.

The Tongariro Trek takes four days, returning each night to the comfort and splendid elegance of The Grand Chateau. You'll be fully guided on all walks (excluding the Tongariro Alpine Crossing which is self guided), and your guide will explain about the areas of historical and natural significance.

Day 1
After checking into the Bayview Chateau Tongariro in the afternoon, we suggest you visit the Whakapapa Visitor Centre - it's one of the best in the country.

Day 2
Pick up by the Guide at 9am from Reception. You will be taken to the top of Mount Ruapehu. Ride the chair lifts from the car park to the Knoll Ridge Chalet, New Zealand's highest restaurant at 2000 metres. From there you'll walk to Dome Shelter at 2672 metres where you'll see the famous crater lake surrounded by snow capped peaks with majestic Mt Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe in the background. On a good day you can see both coasts.

Day 3
On day 3 you'll embark on what is known as the best one day walk in New Zealand - the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Your route takes you past the active Red Crater and onto the brilliantly coloured Emerald and Blue Lakes. And then pass Mt Ngauruhoe. 6-8 hours walking one way.

Day 4
Day 4 is a reserve day, and you can choose from several shorter walks, including the magnificent Taranaki Falls, Silica Rapids and Tama Lakes.

Day 5
After enjoying breakfast at the Bayview Chateau Tongariro, there's plenty of time to pack before you leave.
