Rob Roy Glacier Trek
Full Day including Lunch
Price from £136 per person
An Eco Wanaka Adventures vehicle will pick you up from your hotel for your transfer to the departure point of your tour. Just one hour from Wanaka is the beautiful World Heritage area of the Mount Aspiring National Park. Within the park is the Rob Roy Glacier, known as the 'Jewel of Mount Aspiring National Park'. It is a massive glacier that begins 2606 metres above on Rob Roy Peak and clings to the ever-steepening mountainside as it descends into the Rob Roy Valley. The day begins with a scenic drive around Lake Wanaka, and into the Matukituki Valley. After driving through several fords, arrive at Raspberry Hut, an old shepherds hut. From here, the guided trekking begins with a 30 minute walk along the banks of the Matukituki River. After entering Mount Aspiring National Park via a swing bridge across the river, the trek steadily climbs into rainforest with a wide variety of moss, ferns, shrubs and trees. After leisurely trekking for 2 hours, the forest drops away and you enter open ground of alpine herbs and flowers, and the glory of the Rob Roy Glacier's panorama unfolds. Here, take time to relax and enjoy one of the best views Mother Nature offers, while sitting and eating a picnic lunch. Occasionally, large chunks of ice and snow (sometimes the size of a car) can be seen tumbling from a distance, dropping 150 – 300 metres - an incredible sight and sound. A 261 metre waterfall falls cleanly down a sheer wall. Following lunch, the return is all downhill back to the car park before the return journey to Wanaka. A reasonable fitness level is required. The actual walking distance is 10 kilometres return and the actual walking time is 5 hours return.
