Kaikoura Wilderness Walks takes you on an exclusive guided walk, at a gentle pace, through the Puhi Peaks Nature Reserve; a protected Significant  Natural Area of International Importance, that is renowned as a haven for a diverse array of rare and endangered native species of flora and fauna.

Kaikoura Wilderness Walks offers 2 or 3 day guided hiking tours traversing New Zealand's highest privately owned land rising to 2438m (8,000ft).Overnight accommodation is provided at the purpose-built, eco-friendly Shearwater Lodge.Explore the Seaward Kaikoura mountain range, through the Puhi Peaks Nature Reserve with a maximum of 12 guests at any one time.Two departures each week
from October through to March
2 day walk departs Fridays and 3 day walk departs Tuesdays.

  • Guests on our exclusive guided hikes are treated to luxurious accommodation at Shearwater Lodge.This purpose-built, eco-friendly lodge is set in a spectacular alpine valley at an elevation of 1000m (3280ft)
  • Six super-king or twin/share bedrooms, accommodate up to twelve guests. Each room has its own en suite bathroom and private balcony.
  • The spacious guest lounge provides the prefect place to relax and reflect on the outstanding environment.
  • Guests enjoy delicious, New Zealand cuisine, wines and beers. Picnic lunches are provided on the track.

 

Day one:
Puhi Peaks Station/Totara Saddle/Ancient Forest/Shearwater Lodge
Distance: 8.5km (5.3 miles) Time: 1.5 -2hrs morning, 4-5hrs afternoon
A vehicle will transport you and your luggage from Kaikoura to the start of the walk at Puhi Peaks Station.
The first part of the walk is a pleasant mix of bush and forest environments; kanuka, manuka, beech, and fern dominate but specimens of rimu and totara can be seen. This part of the walk takes approximately
1.5 - 2 hours and climbs to the vantage point at Totara Saddle, where a picnic lunch is served. Read more

Day Two:
Shearwater Lodge/Happy Valley/Surveyor's Peak Lookout/Seaward Saddle/Shearwater Lodge/Beverley Falls/Puhi Peaks Station
Walk to Surveyor's Peak Lookout then return to Shearwater Lodge for lunch. A brief visit to the beautiful Beverley Falls is a highlight before the walk out. The final section of the walk meanders down the ridge line before re-entering the beech forest and the return to Puhi Peaks Station at around 4.30pm. A vehicle will transport you and your luggage back to Kaikoura at approximately 5.30pm.

Distance: 5.5km (3.4 miles) Time: 4-5hrs
After a hearty breakfast, leave behind Shearwater Lodge and experience extraordinary alpine valleys and dramatic vistas. On this section the track traverses Happy Valley and walkers enjoy the alpine vista of spectacularly rugged mountains which rise steeply from each side of the valley. Read more

Day Three:
Shearwater Lodge/Beverley Falls/Shearwater Lodge/Puhi Peaks Station
Distance: 6 km (3.7 mile) Time: 1.5hrs morning, 2.5hrs afternoon
After breakfast, take a leisurely walk to the beautiful Beverley Falls through the ancient forest. Lunch is served at Shearwater Lodge and after, it is time for the walk out. A different track is taken to that on the way in and much of this is downhill following the ridge line before re-entering the beech forest. Once again, there are plenty of opportunities to see the birdlife and wild animals on the descent. The end of the track, and return to Puhi Peaks Station, is reached at approximately 4.30 pm where your luggage and transport back to Kaikoura will be waiting. Arrival time in Kaikoura is approximately 5.30pm.
